ISIS- Vatican tightens security

Islamic militants to attack Rome, Vatican: Pope’s Guards

•ISIS militants

The chief of the Swiss Guards, the force that protects the Vatican, has said it is only “a matter of time” before an attack inspired or directed by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) against the home of the Catholic church.

Commander Christoph Graf, speaking to Swiss Catholic news website cath.ch, said that the force that acts as the security for Pope Francis is prepared for any act of extremism.

“Perhaps it is only a matter of time before an attack like that happens in Rome. But we are ready also for this,” he said. Created in the 16th century, the force is one of the oldest armies in the world and consists solely of young Swiss adult men who proscribe to Catholicism.

Graf said that the guards are not only there for appearances but to defend one of the most famous world figures and most important religious sites. Because of their unique uniforms, the guards are popular with tourists.

The radical Islamist group has regularly used the imagery of the Pope and the Vatican in its propaganda output. It has claimed that it will overthrow Rome, a symbol of the Roman Catholic religion, whose followers the group considers to be “apostates,” and “crusaders.” In February 2015, ISIS released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians.

It included a message to Italy that called “the nation signed with the blood of the cross.” It has also released an issue of its now-defunct propaganda magazine Dabiq with the Vatican’s famous St. Peter’s Square on the cover underneath the headline “The Failed Crusade.”

In April 2016, Italian authorities foiled a jihadist plot to target the Israeli embassy in Rome and the Vatican. Police arrested four people, one who had received orders from an ISIS militant in Syria via the WhatsApp messaging service.

“For these enemies I swear if I manage to bring my family to safety, I swear I will be the first to attack...in this crusading Italy...the Vatican with the will of God,” the suspected would-be attacker in the cell allegedly told another member in an audio message that Italian authorities intercepted.

The main boulevard that leads to St. Peter’s Square remains closed to traffic because of fears of an attack, and security has been increased amid a spate of ISIS-inspired attacks across Europe this year.

Ahiara Diocese: World now see Nigerian Catholics as disloyal to Pope – Kaigama

The Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has appealed to priests and lay faithful of Ahiara Diocese to shelve their swords and accept Most Rev. Peter Okpalaeke as their consecrated Bishop.

Kaigama, who is also the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), made the appeal in an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Jos.

Ahiara Catholic Diocese has remained without a Bishop, more than four years after the death of its pioneer, Bishop, Rt. Rev. Victor Chikwe.

Okpalaeke, who was appointed and consecrated in 2012 was rejected based on clannish differences, sources said.

In May, the Pope gave the Diocese a 30-day ultimatum to accept Okpalaeke and apologise over its unruly behaviour to him or face sanctions.

The ultimatum expired in June with compliance from some priests while others remain adamant.

According to kaigama, the church has not been pleasant with the lingering crisis rocking the Diocese in the past years.

“We are not happy that the church in Ahiara is outside the system for this long.

“We are particularly not happy that the name of Nigeria is ringing in different parts of the world as people who are disloyal to the authority of the Pope.

“But it is our fervent prayer that the people of Ahiara will see reason and come back to the church that is founded on the obedience to the authority of God.

“We sincerely pray and appeal to the priests and indeed the people, to put their grievances aside and accept Bishop Okpalaeke so that the work of God can continue,” he appealed.

Kaigama also called on Christians to pray for God’s intervention for the return of normalcy in the Diocese so that His gospel would be propagated well.

Jamb-Need for clarity

Professor Oluyemisi Obilade wrote:
The JAMB ADMISSION ISSUE: A NEED FOR CLARITY.
Some of us who were physically present at the JAMB Policy meeting owe it a duty
to clarify issues and right some wrongs in the reportage of the meeting. It is a pity
that the personality and position of the incumbent Registrar, Prof Oloyede, is being
unfairly vilified when he should be commended. These are the facts as observed and
as stated to us at the meeting.
1. JAMB was established at the instance of 13 Vice Chancellors some decades
ago to stream-line the process of admission and eliminate the duplication of
entrance examinations to universities.
2. JAMB, by the edict establishing it, is supposed to confine itself to the conduct
of examinations and release of results to the universities.
3. The Senate of each university is then expected to decide on the admission
criteria and CUT OFF MARKS. Please note that the Senate of the university
is the highest body empowered to make policies/pronouncements on
academic matters. They award the degrees.
4. Over the years however, JAMB, had exceeded its mandate and sought to take
over the roles of the university Senate. It came to a head last year when JAMB
forwarded the lists of students admitted to each university. Of course this was
strongly resisted by most Vice-Chancellors, including yours sincerely. Last
time I checked, TASUED is fully owned by the Government and people of
Ogun State, and no parastatal in Abuja, will be permitted to act as if it
owns/operates TASUED. This is the background of what brought in Prof
Oloyede as the new Registrar.
5. Since he came on board, he has tried to address the issues and correct
anomalies observed. It was in the process of doing this that certain decisions
were taken.
a) The power to 'fully own' the admission process was transferred back
to the Senate of each university, where it rightly belongs. Each
university now has some freedom to decide it's cut-off point, with a
proviso that none should go below 120, which was the lowest
submission. Most universities are sticking to 170-200 cut-off mark.
b) All admission processes should be placed on the table of public
scrutiny and there should be no 'under the table' admission which is
then covered later by regularisation through JAMB. The Registrar
said he was shocked by the huge number of students who had not
taken the JAMB exam and we're surreptitiously admitted by some
universities. He said this has to stop from this session.
6. Prof Oloyede has computerised the admission process to make it more
inclusive, open and interactive. Applicants now have the opportunity to track
their admission status and accept /reject courses offered whilst being
considered by other universities who now have access to data of ALL
applicants.
7. Prof Oloyede has shown uncommon courage in exposing and addressing the
anomalies of the past. Please remember that he also returned over 5 billion
Naira to the coffers of the Federal Government, an amount which the Minister
of Education said was higher than the sum total amount paid by JAMB since
its establishment. I believe the criticism of Prof Oloyede is unfair and could
dampen his enthusiasm for the job. He should be commended not
condemned. Please note that I am not Prof Oloyede's spokesperson neither
does he know of this submission. But I was at the meeting and I felt a need
to clarify issues.
All it takes for evil to thrive is for good people to keep silent. Good day my learned professionals on this platform. Forgive whatever shortcomings in this post, I am just teacher, but a trained journalist

Rev.fr. Patrick Edet excommunicated

Catholic Church excommunicates Rev. Patrick Edet, advises parishioners to stay away from him

The Catholic Church in Nigeria has excommunicated a priest who recently quit the Church, saying he wants to make heaven.

The Church said it was by the notice stripping the priest of all privileges accruing to a leader of the Church.

Patrick Edet, who served in the Catholic Diocese of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, had announced over a local radio station on August 2 that he was leaving the Catholic Church so he could be ‘free to serve God the way he wanted.’

Before he left Catholic Church, Mr. Edet ran a Pentecostal-style fellowship that attracted a huge crowd in the city of Uyo.

He said leaving the Catholic Church now gave him the freedom to manage the fellowship in his own style, without getting into conflict with his former church, adding that being a Catholic priest was like being restricted to “a box.”

“You cannot know God beyond that box. You cannot express God beyond that box. And any attempt for you to go beyond that box brings you label.

“The reason I am doing this is that I want to be right with God first. I want to go to heaven when I die,” he said.

The Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese, John Ayah, in his reaction to the development, issued a general notice to the parishioners on August 12, where he advised Catholics to stay away from Mr. Edet.

“I advise that no Catholic member should approach him to obtain any service or guidance henceforth in the name of the Church,” the bishop said, adding that the Church disassociated itself from the activities of Mr. Edet.

“Any Catholic who attends his programme or identifies with him (Mr. Edet) in any way does so at the risk of his or her Catholic faith and membership,” he said.

The bishop said following Mr. Edet’s resignation, he has stripped him of all his power, rights and privileges as a Catholic priest.

Mr. Ayah said he was forwarding Mr. Edet’s resignation letter to Pope Francis for further directives on the matter.

Nigerians mostly on social media had expressed diverse reactions on the resignation with some lauding his confidence while others criticised him as an attention seeker.
